PROJECT 1

DIKMEN GARBAGE DUMP

We are all aware of that Dikmen Garbage Dump is threatening, poisioning and polluting Nicosia for many years and  worse luck, it covers the Nicosia Turkish Municipality!  Former Mayors of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality did not pay enough attention to the Dikmen Garbage Dump, condemning Nicosia and the places around it to live under the threat.

Now, its time to stop it.

Dikmen Garbage Dump Project

Systems of producing or composting Organic fertilizer

We will be returning what comes from the nature back to the nature

What is composting?

Its the conversion of organic waste into necessary nutritional elements for plants.  The making use of elements by creating compost and regaining what comes from nature back to nature are  methods which have been in use. In the past, composting was applied in China for this aim, while in the present, large amounts of domestic waste are being converted into beneficial products such as hummus and used for agriculture in developed countries.

Organic material is the most important  element for the fertility of the soil. The organic element deficiency of our soil decreases the level of fertility. The value of soil which has deficiency of organic element is low. Usually, in order to increase the amount of organic material in our soil, we apply fertilizers or other similar materials which are organically rich. Compost fertilizer has importance in supplying the organic material need of our soil and  at the same time, it is important for providing the use of city waste in manufacturing.

PROJECT 2

MUNICIPAL HOUSING PROJECT

The leading problem of Nicosia is inadequacy of houses. After the municipal houses which were built during the British Period, the Nicosia Turkish Municipality ignored and didn’t make any attempts to solve this problem.  However, the sine qua non of a modern municipality is to develop sustainable projects which can supply the main needs of the citizens. Unfortunately,  the previous administrations of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality failed in the field.  We have Municipal Housing Project in order to supply the main need of our citizens.

Municipal Houses

We will provide houses to every necessitous citizens.

The housing problem is one of the main problems of cities all around the world. However, in developed and European countries the local governments accepted the presence of the problem and developed projects in order to solve the problem. In Nicosia, all administrations which came to duty did not even think that the problem was their own problem. Unfortunately, ignoring these problems does not eliminate them. Housing is a big problem in Nicosia and as each modern municipality, the Nicosia Turkish Municipality accepted the presence of the problem, took responsibility and developed projects to eliminate them.

PROJECT 3

NICOSIA CENTRAL PARK PROJECT

I promise to contribute to Nicosia with a Central Park as well as planting areas arising from parcellation. The Nicosia Central Park has been designed as an area with a big artificial lake in the middle and a place where the Nicosians could rest and make sports.

While İstanbul is renowned with Yıldız Park, Ankara with Gençlik Park, New York with Central Park and London with Hyde Park, it is among my main duties to provide such a park to Nicosians.

Recreational and Kids Park,

Nicosia is necessitious to parks, playing grounds, jasmines, trees, and green in short. If a city like Nicosia is yearning to green, this lack is not only due to natural reasons, its a social lack as well. In other words, it is a situation that can be solved by human action.

However, Nicosia Turkish Municipality gains a lot of land by the name of green area every year from land parcellation but does not use those lands for this purpose. Those empty lands become full of weed and cause all kinds of insects and flies in the city. Nicosia will be rescued from this problem.

PROJECT 4

NICOSIA WATER PROJECT

Nicosians have forgotten the clean water flowing from taps. As can be seen from graphics, according to the results a scientific work made in 2006, 88% of the Nicosians indentfied the Nicosia water as bad and very bad. This result must be a dishonourable picture for a local government. However, we saw that none of the Mayors until now, dealt with water quality problem like other problems and they tried to make us forget about it.

Water, that is the basic need of human life, will not be a problem anymore for Nicosia.  The first stage of the projects related to this subject is the renewal of the water pipes that haven’t been renewed and that comprise canceregenous items. The second stage of our project will be preventing water escaping from the pipes that has already been layed but not unfavorable in terms of health. In the third stage, water will be refined before it comes to Nicosia. Water of springs that feed Nicosia, will be refined in sewege works before being pumped into the city.

PROJECT 5

INTEGRATED TRAFFIC PROJECT

The solutions that were provided until now for the traffic problem of Nicosia which is seen as unsolvable anyhow, just consist of new road constructions. However, as known all over the world, more roads mean more cars. In short, constructing new roads is not sufficient for solving the traffic problem. It is necesarry to think of the traffic problem as a whole and embody the possible solutions according to this. In other words, while making new roads and adjusting the current intercommunication it is also necessary to take precautions in order to limit the entry of heavy vehicles into the city.

While it is necessary to foster public transport, it is also necessary to make it qualified and systematic. Car park problem must be solved while making pedestrian zones at the same time. Pedestrian lines and bike paths should be thought of as part of integrated whole. However, more importantly, all offers that will be brought should be accepted by the community.

The following graph is taken from a work that we made in May, 2006. As seen in the first graph, 84 percent of Nicosia voters described the traffic of Nicosia as “bad” or “very bad”.  However, as seen in the second graph the public transport service that the municipality offers now, is far from being an option that voters accept. This service will be solved once and for all. It is seen that renewal of bus-stops does not make the service attractive.

Up to date, all Mayors tried to give limited public transport services and thus were unsuccessful and did not receive support.

Thinking again about Public Transportation

We have to think of public transportation perception on a wider scale. If our people don’t go to bus stops, we should bring bus stops to them. Thousands of cars are on roads at schools’ starting time, lunch time and schools’ closing time every day during the academic year in Nicosia. People have huge problems of traffic and parking within these hours. IfI become the Mayor of Nicosia in June 2006, we will be providing municipal public transportation to the state schools. In case of being accepted by the public, we will spread the service to all schools.

This service will help to relieve the traffic and parking problems of Nicosia and will also ease the lives of both parents and students. In order to solve the traffic problem, it is necessary to be creative and not an illusionist.

Car Park Problem and Park Contour

Cars parked along the roads pose serious dangers. As we have limited areas geographically, we do not have such a luxury as using these roads inefficiently. From the minute of perceiving that the inadequency of car park areas became an unsolvable problem, multi-storeyed car parks are brought to the agenda. It is necessary to start using multi-storeyed car parks in some areas. However, before multi-storeyed car parks, we should use the current areas as car parks by making our roads one-way. This method provides the resources to be used without consuming and also is an application that can be immediately put in service. With the Park Contour devices that we will put into practice, it will be possible to park on roads by paying only a very small fee. I believe our community will accept this project as well.
